Salem Cross Inn-Fireplace Feast-West Brookfield MA

Horse Drawn Sleigh ride before dinner.

This is a bit further than the Capital Region Backyard but well worth the trip. Located just east of Springfield MA at approximately 120miles it takes just short of 2 hours to reach from Albany. The Salem Cross Inn is a restored 18th century farmhouse nestled on 600 acres of New England countryside.

I was referred to this event by friends who attended back in December. A group of six, we decided to go on Valentines Day. Upon arrival we were directed downstairs to a large room where cider and wine heated with a red hot iron rod are served. Outside waits the horse drawn sleigh. After the ride you come back to see the prime rib roasting in the fireplace on an actual spit from the 1700s. This is followed by a cauldron of seafood chowder heated in the fireplace as well. Then comes the making of the apple pie. Just the experience and ambiance of this early New England meal preparation make it well worth the cost of the $62 per person.

Original 1700s era roasting spit.

When dinner is ready we were directed upstairs to a large rustic dining room in a part of the inn that started out as a barn in 1705. Again, ambiance, food, and service were incredible!

Heating the cider.

I was told by the owners that this is just one of the events that they offer. They are also a full service restaurant, wedding and event venue that pride themselves on providing a “farm to table” experience by harvesting from their own gardens and raising their own beef as well as being supplied by other area farms.
